These two players are the best in the world, with similar numbers but a different career, one of them has played in Barcelona for ever while the other have changed clubs constantly, one of them is humble and avoids the media while the other is in the news of several magazines on weekly basis. From here you get the idea about what is happening.

Both of them are successful but in order to achieve their goals they needed coaching and a great team behind them to keep them engaged and satisfied. 

The key here is engagement, Messi doesn't want to leave because he is connected with Barcelona and Barcelona is connected with him at every level, no attrition. Ronaldo missed something and that motivated him to find constant change.
